Over the years, Kanye West also known as “Ye” has been a known figure to many. From his award winning albums, to his designer fashion line, West has built a life for himself and his family. However, there’s no fame without drama and mess in the mix. From being officially diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 2017, mental health has been a main part of Kanye’s life. He has openly spoken out about his struggles through his music, interviews, and tweets. There’s also been recent family drama, with Kanye and Kim Kardashian divorcing. From supporting twenty different charities and foundations, to saying “slavery is a choice,” the media has controversial opinions on Kanye. The real questions are, should Kanye West have the spotlight he’s been given? Is he a role model we should look up to? Let’s unpack some of this.

West dropped out of college after attending Chicago State University for one year, and began putting his producing talents to use. He relocated to New York City, where he made his name through Roc-A-Fella Records, producing for Jay-Z’s album, “Blueprint.” Despite his lack of street cred due to his middle-class background, West finally produced “The College Dropout,” his debut solo album released in 2004. This brought attention towards his name and music, which blew up, allowing his career to only go upwards.

At the Video Music Awards in 2009, Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video, when Kanye ran onto the stage, took the mic, and said “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” This did not go over well for him, as he became infamous across the media after video footage was posted. He followed up with a series of apologies over twitter. Speaking of Kanye’s twitter, he tends to let the media know about his private life, tweeting sporadically and even about Kim forcing him to go to therapy.

In 2020, West announced his United States presidential campaign, which shocked the world. Many people thought that it was a sort of scam to draw votes away from the Democratic Party, seeing as he ran in the Republican Party. Earning around 60,000 votes within 12 states, this couldn’t sway his or any Republican campaign.

It’s rumored that Kanye began spiraling out of control after his mother’s death in November of 2007. He recently released an album titled “Donda,” which is named after her. Touching on his BPD, Kanye spoke on the podcast,“Drink Champs,” saying, “We are all on the spectrum somewhere.”  On the same podcast he also talked about his relationship with Kim Kardashian, saying “my kids want their parents to stay together,” and “I want us to be together.”

Kim reportedly filed for divorce in February of 2019, after almost seven years of marriage and four kids. Not long after, a new relationship sparked between Kanye and Julia Fox, some might say she’s a “Kim look alike.” Kim is now dating Pete Davidson, and while Kanye is in a relationship himself, he seems to have it out for Pete. He has publicly dissed Pete with a new diss track called “Eazy,” saying “God saved me from the crash, just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s a**.” On Instagram, Kanye has posted and deleted many photos, including screenshots of messages telling Pete, “YOU WILL NEVER SEE MY KIDS.”

This is only the surface of Kanye’s “evolution” if you will, from producing music for others to becoming a full blown billionaire. I do believe that the fame has gone to his head, with the inability to keep anything private in his life anymore. He has posted screenshots of Kim saying she’s now fearing for Pete’s safety after Kanye has threatened him. West has also ordered fans to scream at Pete, leaving the whole situation to escalate. The media uses Kanye’s “episodes” as entertainment, when they don’t realize that he’s only human and genuinely struggling. Not disregarding the fact that Kanye built his life from scratch, but I don’t believe he’s a figure we should be looking up to since it’s clear he does not want the help he’s been offered countless times.
