On Sept. 27, 2017, United Technologies Corporation (UTC) bought out Rockwell Collins for roughly $30 billion. This buyout was not finalized until the acquisition of Rockwell Collins was approved by the European Union (EU) in early May 2018.

The merger of these two large aerospace corporations brought about concerns that market competition in the aerospace industry would decline. After making various concessions to the EU, the UTC merger with Rockwell was approved. This merger creates one of the world’s largest aerospace equipment suppliers and directly impacts Cedar Rapids. Now officially known as Collins Aerospace, Collins executives will move from their Cedar Rapids location to Palm Beach County Florida. In a statement issued by the UTC, this Florida operation was referred to as a “small executive leadership office.”

Except for the elimination of certain executive positions, this move will not significantly affect the 8,000 employee branch of Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids as the branches avionics and mission systems responsibilities will remain virtually the same.
