A week ago I got back from Washington’s annual service trip to Guatemala, where a group of students go down to Guatemala with Senor Burke and build four homes for four families in need. We were in contact with an organization called ImaginGuate that helps local families in need of housing and other accommodations.  What I thought would be a fun time turned out to be a life changing experience. We started off the trip by meeting with our gracious host families that opened up rooms in their homes for us to stay and would also prepare us a delicious breakfast and dinner daily.

The second day we were there we started building homes for four inspiring families.  Our entire group was divided into four separate groups and each group had two ImaginGuate experienced builders. The building process consisted of cutting wood, cutting cement blocks, laying cement and lots of mixing cement. The families we built the homes for were also extremely gracious and cooked us a lunch of a mixture of home grown vegetables and handmade tortillas.

The way the family treated us was extremely humbling. They offered to help the building process anyway they could. They were extremely generous even though they didn’t have much to offer. This trip was one of the most impactful experiences of my life and really opened my eyes to so much.

I also made a video highlighting my experience.
