Walker Ochs, ’19, gives a speech during the walkout on Wednesday, Feb 21.
  • Around 10:34 A.M. Feb. 21, members of the Washington student body walked out of class to assemble beneath the flagpole in front of the school in response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The objective of the walkout was for students to express their disapproval with the way our government handles legislature regarding firearms and pay respects to the loss of the 17 students and faculty killed in the Parkland shooting.

Nathaniel Burke, ’18, Miriam Ochs, ’18, Walker Ochs, ’19, Madison Bartlett, ’19, Paul Linville, ’19, and Alex Wickham, ’19, all gave speeches during the event.

Four media outlets were present at this gathering: The Surveyor, KGAN, KCRG, and The Gazette.

Look below for video that we shot of the event.

Correction: A previous version of this article claimed Hunter Bartlett, ’19, gave a speech instead of  Madison Bartlett, ’19.
